Loyola University’s CHOIR (Center for Health Outcomes and Informatics Research) needed marketing collateral to support and promote its Salon ‘24 event, leading up to and on the day of the event.
CHOIR was launched by Loyola University Chicago to bridge the gap between health informatics and outcomes research and the communities they serve to help improve health outcomes.
The “Salon” conference is an annual event where students, faculty, community members, and data scientists come together to discuss topics related to critical issues related to health equity in Chicago.
This design project encompassed the following design materials to help promote the Salon ‘24 event:
• Save-the-date digital flyers
• Digital invites
• Speaker graphics
• Event Programs
• T-shirt design
• Screen panels for display at the event
“Put the humanity in data science”
“Data Science for Social Thinkers” is the CHOIR motto. This year’s Salon event featured an overall theme of “Money on My Mind.”
The client wanted to showcase the human impact of data science and put the humanity in the data science.
After meeting with the clients, it became clear to me that the main focus of the design should be on the human element.
Agile Framework
There was a tight turn around on the “Save The Date” flyer, so I focused on making a “lite” version of the design direction that could be built upon for the rest of the design collateral. Although “lite”, this Save the Date made a big impact and dictated the look and feel of the other designs.
Using an Agile framework, I moved forward with an “iterative and incremental development” style of design. I created one illustration for the Save the Date flyer and created a base version of the look & feel. This allowed us to save time and promote the event as soon as possible.
Afterwards, I created the rest of the event designs in order of priority.
Make it Human
To bring the human element into the designs, I illustrated custom characters to tell different stories related to the “Money on My Mind” theme.
From my initial meeting with the client, I determined that the goal was to “Put the humanity in data science.” This design project aimed to connect with the audience on a more personal level.
My goal was to humanize the design and make it more approachable by creating a design that felt like it was talking to a real person.
With this in mind, “character” illustrations, hand-drawn elements, colorful graphics, and abstract elements were used throughout the designs, while keeping to the overall theme of “Money on My Mind.”
Each character helped create a narrative and told a different story about how data science related to finance and funding impacted people, further driving home the "make it human" component.
